Chris Young’s deeply personal new single “Drowning” just got more so for the singer and his fans.
Young was inspired by the unexpected death of his friend Adam Carnes to pen the ballad about grief with Corey Crowder and Josh Hoge. The video for the song was released Monday and includes a solemn Young holding a photo of his friend. Earlier this month, the singer put out a call to his fans to bring photos of their loved ones who have died to his Richmond, Virginia, concert. The participants were filmed holding their photos for the video as a tribute to their lost parents, spouses, siblings and children.
“I’ve been so amazed at the reaction to this song,” Young said in a statement. “I wrote it with two friends as a moment of healing and had no idea it would touch so many people before it was even chosen as a single. The video, combining so many personal moments alongside a live performance, totally embodies that, and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
The video marks the multiplatinum-selling country singer’s directorial debut. Young co-directed the clip alongside Native 31 Films producer and director Jeff Johnson. The men conceptualized and created a video that intersperses the footage of fans holding photos with Young’s headlining concert at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas — his first there in nearly two years. When he sang “Drowning” during the show, audience members illuminated the arena with their cellphone lights in honor of the victims and fellow survivors of the mass shooting at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in 2017.
“Drowning”; Young’s most recent hit, “Raised on Country”; and “Town Ain’t Big Enough,” his duet with Lauren Alaina, are available now and will be included on his next studio album.
